July has been a month for celebrating women’s achievements. Six remarkable women shinned up the Shard to draw attention very successfully to our Save the Arctic campaign. And across the UK women have been walking in groups to remember the day 100 years ago, 26th July 1913, when 50,000 women converged on Hyde Park, walking from all parts of the country, to demand the vote.
On Wednesday 24th July women walked again in Billingshurst, West Sussex, to commemorate the commitment, imagination and sacrifices of those campaigners 100 years ago, and met again on Friday 26th, fittingly in Billingshurt’s Womens Hall, given to the village in 1923 by two local suffragettes, sisters Ellen and Edith Beck.
Friday’s event was an invitation, open to all regardless of age or sex, to Dream of a Better World, and Greenpeace was invited to share its vision of a world less ravaged by conflict and environmental destruction. You can see the photos of the women, and men, who shared our dream to Save the Arctic on our Flickr page.
Big thanks to the Billingshurst WI who made tea, scones and cakes as only the WI know how, and to Emily who made it all happen!
