If you are concerned about Gatwick Airport's plans for a second runway and wish to know more about the arguments for and against, try to make it to this seminar. Hosted by CPRE Sussex, CPRE Surrey and GACC (Gatwick Area Conservation Campaign), chaired by Surrey county councillor Helen Clack, the seminar will include presentations by local MP Right Hon. Francis Maude (Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General), Tim Johnson (Director of the Aviation Environment Federation) and Tim Harrold (Chair of Surrey CPRE Aviation Group). There will be plenty of time for discussion and debate.
This is about more than just another strip of tarmac. Gatwick's plans entail expanding the annual passenger count from 34 million to 90 million, and more than doubling the present land footprint of the airport. What impact would that have on local roads? Where will all the extra staff come from in an area where traditionally other employers have struggled to recruit and retain skilled staff in competition with Gatwick? Where will they all live? Which buildings,or zones will have to be demolished? And whatever happened to reducing our carbon footprint??
Places should be booked by 11 October by emailing jane.vogt2@btinternet.com and cost £ 12 including lunch. It's free for students and those on low income.
The GACC AGM will be held after lunch and is free to registered members.
More information on GACC and it's previous responses to proposed Gatwick expansion can be found at www.gacc.org.uk .
