Arctic defenders take to the streets!

The battle for the North Pole was taken to the streets of Woking on October 20th to gather Arctic defenders. Greenpeace activists from the Runnymede group, complete with lost Polar bear assembled in the town centre, with banners flying high and leaflets in hand to raise awareness of the Save the Arctic campaign..

There were polar bear hugs and high fives all round for the kids, which gave us the perfect opportunity to talk to mums and dads about the threat in the North Pole from greedy oil barons and industrial fishing fleets wanting to exploit this region.

I was quite surprised at the majority of people who were unaware of what is actually occuring in the high north, although many of those who had no idea of the magnitude of the melting ice were then quick to whip out there phones and sign the scroll. The same people were also eager to learn more about the campaign. If anything it was an empowering reminder of exactly why these street events are so important.

In just the few hours we were there we gained plenty of interest, especially from one young boy, who pretty much point blank refused to leave our bear, when his father did managed to drag him away it wasn't long before he was back for dancing bear antics and an abundance of high fives! Greenpeace activist in the making I reckon!

Lot's of fun was to be had in the square, we danced along to a beat boxer, did the macarena and had our pictures taken by teenagers, adults and the local paper (Nice little article in The Surrey Advertiser too!).

All in all it was a good day of Arctic campaining. But we must keep going, we must keep protesting, we must reach 3 million signatures. We must declare the Arctic a Global Sanctuary for all on this Earth.
