A combined group from Derby and Nottingham Groups targeted the Shell filling station on Priory Island on Saturday 22nd September as part of the “Save the Arctic” campaign. As we gathered, we noticed a police van sitting on the filling station forecourt. Two officers emerged and came across to meet us. They could hardly contain their excitement at having got such a cushy number, but having reminded us that we were not supposed to venture on to Shell property, they retreated to the comfort of their van. We duly took up positions with banner and placards, and managed to distribute leaflets to one of the policemen, some of the customers and the occasional passer-by. Our polar bear was a little late (problems with pass-paw control apparently), but once there, the number of supportive toots from passing motorists increased noticeably. At about 11.30 the filling station staff suddenly appeared with cones to block off the entrance: they had suffered a power failure! Just for once it was nothing to do with us, (honestly), but we felt we should claim the credit, so we lined up right across the entrance for photos under the benevolent eyes of the local constabulary, who were still there when we finally retired for a well-earned lunch.
