Peddle peddle peddle, past Shepherds Bush, Battersea Park, through Clapham and up Tulse Hill, not much traffic this early on a Saturday. Dannielle of SW Greenpeace meets me at her door with a smile and a marquee. Half tucking the table into my belt I waddle into Brockwell park and find our pitch, sequestered away in the charities sector.
Thankfully most of the poles are labelled. Those that aren’t I touch up with shiny nail varnish and the marquee goes up without a struggle. People are meandering around already, the weather has lost some of its recent warmth and Tannoy Lady is getting irate about vehicles and parking. I self-consciously move my bike into the tent.
Soon enough volunteers start arriving to don bib and help out. What was wonderful about this event was the cross-over of people from all sorts of different local London groups who came to spread the word about Greenpeace’s work. And today was a particularly easy sell.
The girls’ wonderful work climbing the Shard has really peaked interest and we found one of the best ways to begin dialogue was to hand out a flier with ‘want to know why the Greenpeace Girls climbed the Shard?’ Lots of good conversations about petrochemical companies and deconstructing their arguments, and many people very interested in fracking, what it’s all about and if it’s a good or a bad thing.
All in all a great day, we spoke to tons of people, some of which already supported us, many who were on the cusp. We walked, talked, explored the fair, watched a sheep shearing demonstration and gave Arctic stickers to kids. Thanks to all the volunteers who made the day so much warmer than the weather!
