Dear Leonardi DiCaprio,
You have led the celebrity world in taking action to protect our planet in everything from adressing climate change, tiger conservation and ocean protection. You have chaired meetings, produced environmental themed films and in 2007 you an Al Gore were the catalysts behind the greenest Academy Awards, on top of putting a focus on climate change that reached million of viewers. So I don't think I need to convince you about the threat to our planet.
Not sure you have heard but right now 28 Greenpeace activists and two journalists as well as the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise have been detained in the Russian port of Murmansk for peacefully protesting the threat of oil drilling in the Arctic. I'm sure you will agree with me that by drilling for oil in the Arctic we take a gamble with the fragile Arctic environment that we cannot afford.
In 2010 you made headlines when attending a tiger summit hosted by Russia. The then Prime Minister and now President Vladimir Putting praised you and called you 'a real man' for getting there despite several flight disruptions. There is no doubt that Putin likes and respect you and I think if you were politely to suggest to him that The Arctic 30 were to be released he would at least listen to you. You could also use your audience on Twitter to voice support using the hashtag #FreeTheArctic30, furthermore if you really got spare time join one of the many solidarity events tomorrow, find the one nearest you: http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/campaigns/climate-change/arctic-impacts/October-5-day-of-solidarity/
Yours sincerely,
Anders Lorenzen
Environmentalist and Greenpeace activist,
