Yesterday on the International Day of Arctic Action Greenpeace volunteers took to the streets around the world with one clear message we need to protect the Arctic by creating a UN backed sanctuary meaning that no one owns the Arctic just as it's the case with Antarctica. This is crucial at a time when the 5 Arctic nations USA, Canada, Denmark, Norway and Russia are desperate to lay claim to the undisputed Arctic areas, and especially around the North Pole where the Russian's in 2007 controversially planted a Russian flag on the bottom of the seabed and Denmark have also said that they want to claim the North Pole.

The new campaign also focuses on a counteraction to Russia's flag planting by creating an Arctic scroll with one million signatures to be put next to the Russian flag. Several celebrites including the likes of Paul McCartney, Thom Yorke, Penelope Cruz and the list goes on...Today the number of people haven't signed up reached 100.000.

We had together with the West London group set up a stall outside the Natural History Museum to tell people that no is the time to protect the Arctic.

It all culminated with gathering together with several other London networks who had also been out campaigning in front of Shell HQ at Waterloo for a big group photo and out two Polar Bears were on top form.
