Last night we did something which at least at our group was new. I hosted a screening of the Tar Sands film Petroplois. It turned out to be just the right amount of people for the size of my flat and everyone brought food with them and it made an interesting buffet, so once we had eaten and discussed for a while we thought it was about time to get the film on. We were quite curious as we had been told that it was just aerial footage with new dialogue. It started of as quite slow, panning across stunning forest but the music cleverly used gradually building up (just like a Hollywood thriller) like there was about to happen something. The aerial footage actually made it feel like you were sitting in that helicopter, and then it haden't we had entered the destruction of the Tar Sands. We all knew a little bit about it, but we we're all shocked of by this footage which gives a clear view of the scale of the destruction going on here, from here we all took part in like a running commentary and as we were outraged by the pictures been revealed to us felt an urge to comment on everything, and this was just the beginning of the debate that off course carried on long after the film had finished and expanded over to areas like , the Green Deal, Renewable Energy etc...
It proved as well to be a great social outing, and a more relaxed atmosphere where we had time to get to know each other better than. Often at our monthly meetings after we have finished the agenda there is not always time for this, so we will defnitely think of repeating something similary to this as it just gives you something extra and it gives everyone a chance to be creative, this time around that was with food and I think we all feel Sophia won that price.
And to anyone else if you haven't done so I highly recommend you to watch Petroplis as it gives a very clear image of how destructive the Tar Sands are.
