Tar Sands campaign - Wimbledon

Posted by Imogen Michel - 9 May 2010 at 4:27pm - Comments

Today we took the Tar Sands campaign to Wimbledon High Street, asking people passing by to write their message to BP on a petal from BP's flower logo to ask them not to invest in producing oil from carbon-intensive, environmentally destructive tar sands.

Compared to normal methods of extracting oil from crude, getting oil from tar sands like the site BP is considering investing in produces three times the emissions per barrel of oil. In addition to this, extracting oil from tar sands requires the destruction of great chunks of the Canadian boreal forest, destroying the habitats of local animals and plants, and threatening to drive some local species into existence.

Tar sands is by far the most polluting source of oil in existence, and yet BP (who are supposedly 'Beyond Petroleum') are still considering investing billions of pounds into using them.
