Eastleigh - going beyond oil...

Posted by dshubble - 11 November 2010 at 5:52pm - Comments

It's taken a while, but the Southampton group were finally out campaigning for Go Beyond Oil, this time at Barton Peveril College in Eastleigh as part of their Eco Fair.

Green fairs - sometimes they're great for public engagement, sometimes not, but this one was really good. Although I was the only volunteer (midweek + daytime = work clashes), and the event was only on for a couple of hours, 83 cards were signed covering 8 different MPs - the largest number went to Chris Huhne, Eastleigh's own MP, plus quite a few to the MP bordering to the east, Mark Hoban.

A few of the students were feeling pretty keen having been in London for the big fees demo yesterday, and a good proportion wanted to sign up to receive campaign updates - hopefully some will soon be local group volunteers...

At the end, one pleasant surprise - the Fair had included a raffle and the organiser let me know that half the proceeds will be donated to Greenpeace, with the other half going to Oxfam (who were also there, also getting lobby cards signed for Chris Huhne...)

So, feeling pretty upbeat about the campaign - tomorrow I'm off to meet Chris Huhne regarding the Energy Bill, with my pile of cards in hand. Then, we've got another Go Beyond Oil stall in Eastleigh on Nov 19th.
