At lunchtime today, I joined Oxfam staff and volunteers to deliver Oxfam's campaign message from Eastleigh constituents to local MP and Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change Chris Huhne.
Why? Well, while we've been running the Go Beyond Oil campaign (more on that soon...) and lobbying our MPs about action on climate change such as through the 'Energy Bill', Oxfam have been working on a related campaign - as it happens we had stalls next to each other at a recent green fair... The Oxfam camapign essentially asks Chris Huhne to push for 'climate justice' by ensuring that suitable sources of money, such as a 'Robin Hood tax' on banks, are made available for those around the world who most need it to be able to adapt to the effects of climate change that we're (and indeed they're) already seeing.
So, in a spirit of mutual support - the more the merrier I reckon - I went along to Chris Huhne's office (which has become very familiar lately) to join in the handover of a giant poster of signatures, along with a more traditional petition-style list of signatories so that he could respond to constituents individually. You can tell which one's me in the photo because I'm (a) male and (b) not Chris Huhne. I'll be looking out for some coverage in the Echo, and hopefully this will be just the first of many collaborations as Greenpeace and others try to tackle the enormity of climate change.
