2011 is still young, but it's already looking like a big one in our campaign to end the plunder of the oceans. With fish stocks plummeting and other marine life suffering due to irresponsible and damaging fishing methods, it's good to see that the Big Fish Fight will be starting next week on Channel 4 - 9pm on Tuesday Jan 11th - with 'Hugh's Fish Fight'.. The series will see TV chefs such as Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall investigate the devastation caused by the fishing industry to marine life - and even the oceans themselves.
Hugh F-W will be looking into various dark and murky aspects of the fishing industry and how fish get to our supermarkets e.g.
- The huge numbers of sharks, rays and other fish being caught and killed as bycatch in tuna nets;
- The vast quantities of perfectly edible fish discarded thanks to poor European fishing policies;
- The devastating effects of fish farming (AKA aquaculture) on the environment.
Not only that, but Greenpeace investigators have been working with the production team to reveal the secrets of the tinned tuna industry - watch out for them in episode two on Wednesday at 9pm.
And there's more... we launch our new tinned tuna league table on Monday. Over the last few years, volunteers taking part in our campaign have already convinced many supermarkets to improve their policies when it comes to tinned tuna and we want to make sure the other big names do too. More soon when the new Oceans campaign is launched...
