The Return to Surrey Docks Farm

As you may remember, back in December Southwark Greenpeace ran a stall at Surrey Docks City Farm’s christmas fair, and had a really good time doing so. The farm’s Spring fair was last Saturday, so we headed out there to repeat the exercise. Steve, George and I kicked things off on the morning shift, setting up the stall and, despite the blustery weather, attracting many of the younger fair attendees with our Arctic animal finger puppets and masks. Meanwhile, George got suited-up in the Polar Bear costume, which may well be the greatest attention-attracting device known to humankind. Soon we had a number of grown-ups expressing an interest in our campaign and having their photos taken with the improvised ‘I <3 the Arctic’ speech bubble while their kids scribbled away.

I had to leave around midday, but I’m told that things got even busier in the afternoon, with our little stall getting somewhat overwhelmed by hordes of excited children. Luckily some volunteers from other groups arrived to help stem the tide, and the group was later joined by our famed youngest member and sticker-giving expert. Unfortunately the weather took a turn for the worse at this point and our intrepid band were forced to pack up and flee the driving wind, ferocious rain and flock of dragons* that descended.

Despite this setback, it was a pretty successful day. A good number of I Love the Arctic signups were gathered, and hopefully our group further impressed itself on the Southwark community consciousness. Looking forward to the next fair already…
