Today Luke and I went to the Minster School Southwell as part of their greenweek to spread awareness to the students about the damage caused by unsustainable fishing methods by John West. We used a magnetic fishing game to demonstrate the differences between line and purse seine net fishing (where the fishermen put out a huge fishing net that encircles the fish and captures them all in a giant trap).
The aim of the game was to pick out Tuna from a big tub filled with a variety of other sea life such as sea turtles and endangered sharks. The kids won points for every tuna caught and minus points for anything else that they hauled up. The wide magnet which represented FAD fishing techniques was clearly no match for the responsible line fishing magnet, (a smaller magnet on the end of a pole).
We also handed out the greenpeace leaflets containing credit card sized sustainable fish guides for the students to give to their parents. This means that the parents can see whilst they are shopping which fish are generally sustainable and which ones a low on stocks.
The kids seemed to really enjoy the game and learn alot from the stall.
