We’d been tinkering with the idea of putting on some sort of awareness-raising music event for a while and the University’s Green Week provided us with the perfect opportunity. Green Week exists to provide a week for the Union to focus on green issues and for environmental societies to host a range of events. So we decided to throw a 40th birthday party for Greenpeace, by way of a free open mic night (because we’re a generous lot) in the Students’ Union in association with Music Is Love (who sorted us out with all the technical wizardry that we couldn’t handle).
Sandwiched between two other open mic weekends there was a possibility that the turn out would be less than impressive, but we filled out Venue 2 with a plethora of music-loving individuals. Bedecked in excessive amounts of bunting and Rainbow Warrior posters, and complete with birthday cakes, the night featured a fantastic mix of acts, from the more classic acoustic singers (including our own Ben and Harshad!) to beatboxing and slam poetry. Technical difficulties failed to hinder us with the Music is Love sound crew valiantly working through it.
This evening was such a success, particularly since it was the first Proper Event we’ve ever organised – thank you so much to all the performers and to everyone who showed up to cheer them on. And watch this space – there’ll certainly be more awesome events coming soon!
