11 February, 2012 - 10:30 - 13:00

Shoppers and kids at Telford Town Centre will be in for a treat on Saturday 11th February as Greenpeace activists dressed in exact replica costumes from the hit film Star Wars will set up stall near Telford Library to ask the public to join their campaign against carmaker Volkswagen. VW's one minute advert last year featuring a mini-Darth Vader became the most viewed online ad in history before appearing on TV screens last summer. A subsequent Greenpeace spoof of the film was also a huge internet hit seen by millions of people.

Now Greenpeace brings the Star Wars theme to Telford to highlight VW's poor approach to environmental issues.

Volkswagen spends millions trying to persuade the public that it's a responsible company. But in reality it's opposing key laws that would make our air cleaner and protect the climate, while it only fits its cleanest technology to a small number of its models. VW is so big that it could change the glabal car industry for the better if it used it's size to roll out cleaner vehicles and push for clean energy laws instead of opposing them.

Despite branding itself as a green car company, VW lobbies against key environmental laws, while it fits its cleanest technology to just six per cent of its cars. In June last year Greenpeace launched what has since become one of the organisation's most successfull internet campaigns ever, with over half a million people signing up online to demand that Volkswagen live up to its carefully crafted reputation.

We will be encouraging people to use 'The Force' of people power and fill out postcards which we will then send to VW HQ on their behalf.

If you can't make it on Saturday but still want to help please visit http://http://www.vwdarkside.com/ , download a rebel recruitment poster, order a car sticker and more importantly invite your friends to join the campaign.

But, of course, if you do it online you can't get your picture taken with a Stormtrooper ;)
