94% of Walthamstow residents vote “NO” to replacing Trident

Posted by Cath Keeling - 29 March 2010 at 4:35pm - Comments

On Saturday 27 March we took to the streets of Walthamstow to find out what local residents made of the Government’s plan to spend £97 billion replacing Trident.

With Dave looking cool in his sandwich board, some occasional sunshine, and some interesting rapping accompaniment from a local youth group, we spent three hours cajoling shoppers into stopping for a chat.

In all, 267 people took part in our street poll.  A whopping 251 of them voted “no”, that’s over 94%!  Following the Guardian/ICM poll last summer (where 54% voted to abandon the UK nuclear deterrent), we had strongly suspected that public opinion would be against spending so much money on something so questionable, but even so: 94%!

Okay, so maybe this wasn’t quite a MORI poll, but I think we got the general picture:  Walthamstow thinks that this is entirely bonkers.  Go Walthamstow!
