Having moved to Walthamstow just last week, I thought I would ingratiate myself with the local Greenpeace network by popping along to their monthly meeting yesterday evening (7.30pm, first Wednesday of each month in Ye Olde Rose & Crown, Hoe Street).
I became an active supporter back in 2004 and although I now work for Greenpeace, I still consider myself to be an activist and regularly volunteer for things like direct actions, festivals and other centrally co-ordinated events. But it’s been a while since I did any street campaigning so I decided it was high time I got back in the saddle.
The current campaign is Go Beyond Oil. With the Energy Bill still being debated in the House of Lords, we have a few more weeks to get constituents to sign cards for their MPs before the Bill hits the House of Commons. We have a stack of cards for local MP Stella Creasy but would like to get more before we meet her to hand them over, so we’ve decided to hit the streets of Walthamstow on Saturday 19th March. This is actually my birthday so if you come and help us get cards signed, I may even bring some homemade birthday cake!
We’ll be in the main square in Walthamstow, by the big screen, from 11am-3pm. Look out for the Greenpeace banner and tablecloth and come join us!
