Waltham Forest activists transport themselves to the forefront of the fight against tar sands. On Monday 28 November, some 50 Greenpeace activists helped to blockade the Department for Transport to protest against behind-the-scenes lobbying which is threatening to devastate important European climate legislation.
Secret meetings
There are plenty of other places where you can read about the European Fuel Quality Directive, the carbon-intensive practice of generating oil through tar sands and the secret deals between the UK and Canadian governments so I won’t go into that here.
Suffice to say that for the UK government to be actively blocking legislation which could have a real impact in the fight against climate change is disgraceful. To be doing it at a time when decision-makers from all over the world are gathering for an important climate summit in Durban (and their own ministers are publicly talking about the need for tough climate laws) is unconscionable.
Positive action
That’s why volunteers from Waltham Forest joined fellow concerned citizens to take this action. This was not about a photo opportunity. This was about trying to (metaphorically) shake some sense into the people who work in that building.
By shining a light on these practices, we can only hope that common sense will prevail.
Get involved
You can take action today to keep dirty tar sands out of Europe.
Members of the Waltham Forest Greenpeace network will no doubt be telling tales of chains, tweets, immobilised cars and what passes for vegetarian food in a police station at our next meeting on Wednesday 7 December at 7.15 at the Rose and Crown.
