While the 28 activists and two journalists still being detained in Russia are never far from our hearts and minds, it's also important we continue our work to save the Arctic. And here in Waltham Forest we've got a rollicking good event coming up that we want as many of you to get involved in as possible.
At the end of the month the borough will see its first ever literary festival. Words Over Waltham Forest is being brought to you by the same lovely people behind the E17 Art Trail. And considering ourselves a fairly literary bunch, we thought we would get involved too.
So we're going to write a story about the Arctic. But we don't want to do it by ourselves, we want you to get involved too.
On Saturday 26th October we'll be at The Mill with the start of the story, and inviting you to come along and help finish it. So pop in on the day (anytime between 11am and 4pm) and write a sentence, paragraph or more to decide what happens next in our Arctic themed adventure.
The event is open to all ages and abilities, and as well as contributing to the story, you'll be able to hear about the real life drama going on in the land of the polar bears. I also rather rashly promised everyone a slice of Arctic roll, although unlike the sea ice, I'm hoping to create a version that doesn't melt! (suggestions for ice-cream substitutes gratefully received!)
If you can't make it down to The Mill on the 26th you can also contribute to the story online. We've got a website dedicated to the project being launched, which will go live a couple of days before the event. There you can read the start of the story, and have a think about how you'd like it to continue.
We hope you'll come along and get involved in what is destined to be the only event at the literary festival to have it's own living, breathing polar bear. And as they say round these parts, that's no lie! (Although it might be slightly stretching the truth).
