Greenpeace volunteers willl hold a street poll on plans to spend £97bn replacing the Trident nuclear weapons system at Walthamstow Town Square on 27 March at 12pm.
As the general election battle hots up and politicians rush to tell the public how they plan on cutting the national deficit, we are hoping to raise awareness of the fact that £97bn has already been earmarked for replacing the UK's nuclear weapons arsenal, a subject no party appears too keen to discuss.
The next government is going to make significant cuts to public services in order to tackle the budget deficit. Yet, despite the fact that whoever forms a new government will hold a strategic defence review once in office, both Labour and the Conservatives have stated that they will NOT address the question of Trident as part of this review.
As a result Greenpeace volunteers in Waltham Forest will spend an afternoon gauging public opinion in a street survey, the results of which will be delivered to the party candidates standing for election in Waltham Forest.
