2013 is already here, so let's look back on 2012 to remind us what we experienced and achieved in the last 12 months:
- At the beginning of 2012 we hit our own "hood" (Hammersmith) broadway to stop VWs evil ways. A stormtrooper was spotted with his loyal supporters to inform West Londoners that VW are secretly lobbying against new EU emission standards despite their green image! Scandal!
- The end of March saw our 40 years of Making Waves anniversary celebrations in Chiswick! We were really lucky to welcome Emily Hall (who is the brave lady who climbed the tower at Kingsnorth) as a guest speaker. We also had a raffle, introductions to our campaigns adn of course: CAKE!
- On a rainy spring day a few of us headed to the Apple store on Regent Street to lobby against Apple's dirty coal habit. Greenpeace found out that Apple (amongst others) use coal to power their data centres, so we asked them to clean up their cloud! And they did, success!!
- Early last summer Greenpeace launched their biggest new campaign: Save the Arctic!
- We headed to beautiful South Kensington and recruited new Arctic defenders outside the Natural History museum! We teamed up for with the South West London group for the first time and had a great day out!
- On a beautiful weekend in June a few of us ventured further north than usual, to Regent Park for the London Green Fair. We helped out at Camden GPs stall, watched a great film about Greenpeace's last 40 years and listened to an interesting panel discussion, all in all, a great day.
- And that wasn't the only fair that was visited by West London GP! A few of us set up their table on a sunny July day to join many other activist groups at the West London Peace market, we will definitively return in 2013.
- As part of the Save the Arctic campaign Greenpeace activists targeted Shell garages all around the world on Shell Day 1 for a peaceful protest! West London Greenpeace visited the Bayswater, Chelsea and Kensington Shell stations and then met up with the other London teams for a truly royal photoshoot outside Buckingham Palace!
- As summer drew to an end we went out for some Fish Fighting at Notting Hill Farmers Market for the Be A Fishermen's Friend Campaign. We talked to local, small scale fishermen and conducted a survey which showed that 100% of the interviewed people want a CFP (Common Fisheries Policy) that supports local fishermen and not industrial fishing fleets! And at the end of 2012 the CFP was passed in parliament which supports our demands, SUCCESS AGAIN!
- In the autumn we were sent to Twickenham on a special mission to inform Lib Dem constituents that George Osborn is killing green growth! This is part of our campaign on the Energy Bill which is still ongoing, so stay tuned!
- The winter saw some more serious Save the Arctic polar bear action on the South Bank and then drew to a close with a bang as West London GP joined forces with all other London networks once again and showed Shell how to protest in Islington (blog still to come, sorry!)
All in all, it was a fantastic year and we couldn't have done it without the passion, energy and creativity of all you volunteers! A huge thank you for all your hard work and let's make 2013 even better!
