When the tabards come off

Last Saturday was the first campaigning day of 2013 for West London Greenpeace.

We went back to the Natural History museum, where we first kicked off the Save the Arctic Campaign last July, to sign up more Arctic Defenders. It was a beautiful sunny day, perfect for campaigning and usually I would tell you all about how we raised awareness and engaged with the public and signed up new people.

But today I want to tell you about what happens after we’re finished campaigning, once the polar bear has changed into his everyday clothes and we have packed away the leaflets and tabards and dismantled our table. This is usually when we head to the pub for one (!) well deserved pint. This has become somewhat of a tradition within the last year and we always have great intentions but I have to tell you, it never stops at that one pint.

This is one of the reasons why I love volunteering with Greenpeace. There is so much more to it than “just” campaigning. Don’t get me wrong, I hugely enjoy campaigning, running meetings, fundraising and everything else that comes with it. But sometimes, when the tenth person in a row tells you that “No, they are not interested in saving the Arctic”, it can get frustrating. That’s why it is so great to have our little family of volunteers as a support group. We have a few pints and many laughs, talk about the weirdest things (philosophy, the hottest UK accents and Peruvian mushrooms come to mind) and just enjoy the company of so many people who couldn’t be more individual and different but who all share their passion for the environment.

Like I said, it was an awesome day and I am looking forward to may more laughs, campaigns and pints with West London Greenpeace.
