Last weekend was Worthing's ever popular International Birdman festival (www.worthingbirdman.co.uk), in which contestants launch themselves from a platform on the end of the pier and try to 'fly' as far as they can with the aid of wings or other contraptions.

It attracts a huge turn-out, especially with good weather as it was this year, so it seemed like a no-brainer to take the Fisherman's Friend materials down there and do some good old-fashioned street (well, promenade) campaigning!
The response from the public was brilliant - between the three of us we got 100 cards signed and found a lot of support from the Worthing public. We spoke to fishermen, ex-fishermen and families of fishermen who were all fully behind the campaign. A lot of people spoke about the beam trawlers often coming too close to Worthing - closer than they are supposed to - leaving slim pickings for the town's anglers and commercial fishermen.

The Birdman itself was a resounding success with the winner traveling almost 70m, although this is short of the 100m goal for which there is a £10,000 prize.

We'll continue to raise awareness of the Fishermen's friend campaign in Worthing. If you want to find out more about the group, email worthinggreenpeace@gmail.com. We meet one a month on the 4th Tuesday - next meeting 28th August 7.45pm at the Beechwood Hall Hotel.
