I'm pleased to report a successful night of music and singing at Worthing's Castle Tavern, raising a fantastic £135! This will go towards a new survival pod for volunteers acting in the Arctic to stop the exploitation of melting ice by oil companies drilling for oil without proper regard for the threats this poses to the Arctic wilderness.
The melting ice is an unfolding disaster in itself, threatening the habitat of all wildlife that lives on it, with the result that polar bears were stranded on land last summer and could not range over their usual hunting ground. The Arctic’s sea ice melted at a record pace in 2012: without it the planet will lose one of the means of keeping its climate stable since the ice reflects the sun's rays back into space. Oil companies and industrial size fishing fleets see this as an opportunity for exploitation without properly considering the harm an oil spill or wasteful overfishing would do.
The new survival pod will enable volunteers to remain securely in place with food and shelter in locations where these companies are trying to operate. We believe that the Arctic is too precious an area to allow this exploitation to be considered.
We really appreciate the welcome from the Castle Tavern owners and its customers and thank all musicians and singers who attended, as well as the regular organiser, Marie of PaperFaces, who did a great job. Often bank holidays can be quiet as a lot of people go away, so it was a real pleasure to gain such support in such an enjoyable atmosphere.
The video captures some of the evening's entertainment, many thanks to Joel of Bluw Video for recording and compiling this.
