What on earth has flour and eggs got to do with Greenpeace?
Well, they are some of the essential ingredients (as far as I am aware!) of making cake. And although we’re usually involved in delivering Greenpeace campaigns, over the next few weeks (dates to be confirmed) the group is looking at raising funds to help Greenpeace source a new survival pod.
Since 1997 Greenpeace has used unique, purpose built survival ‘pods’ as a vital resource in some of our direct actions. First used in the forty-two day occupation of Rockall and the Atlantic Frontier campaign and more recently, since 2010, in our Arctic campaign, the two survival pods have been invaluable in helping us sustain our direct actions. However, since 2011, these two pods have been impounded by the authorities in Norway and Greenland.
In the summer of 2012, in the Russian Arctic, we confronted Gazprom's drilling rig in the Pechora Sea, but without a survival pod. These actions highlighted how essential a pod is for the safety of activists and to help prolong an action in order to delay Arctic drilling.
Greenpeace now needs to design and manufacture a new survival pod in time for Arctic campaigning this summer. And as you might imagine, such an item is an expensive bit of kit.
So, in an effort to contribute towards the cost of this bit of kit, some of the group are putting on the aprons, getting out the mixing bowls and will be creating all manner of yummy scrummy cake. I personally look forward to eating the cake...I wonder if there will be some Arctic Roll?
We’ll be having stalls for you to have your cake and eat it whilst helping raise money for this essential ingredient.
