An oil leak on the Cormorant Alpha oil rig North East of the Shetland coast, has lead to the shutting down of a pipeline servicing 27 oil fields.
Yet again the failure to ensure the safe extraction of oil has been brought into the eyes of the watching world. All of this has happened in waters that are calm in comparison to that in the Arctic.
This latest leak and drastic measures to ensure the safety of personnel and the environment would be disastrous to the people and wildlife of Shetland, but it would be nothing compared to any spill in the Arctic.

Time and again large oil companies are showing a total disregard for the sensitive areas of our world in order to squeeze the last dregs of a dying and ever more dangerous industry. as the urgency to get to oil that is close to being unobtainable moves forward with fevered desperation, oil companies take greater risks and with those risks the chance of multiple deaths of humans and untold damage to the pristeen environment, just like the gulf of Mexico disaster.
If oil companies cannot operate in calm waters off the UK then they should not be anywhere near one of the worlds last true wildernesses, the Arctic should be a monument of natural beauty, a gift to the people of Planet Earth, not an excuse for greed over common sense.
