We arrived at the Shell petrol station at the corner of London Road/Boston Street, Sheffield at 11am on a cloudy, windy day. Lots of cars stopped to read our Aurora message board and took Aurora and Save the Arctic leaflets and also asked why we were protesting and if we were asking them to boycott Shell that day. We explained that we were asking members of the public to contact their Members of Parliament and ask them to put pressure on Shell to drop their plans to drill in the Arctic. We want the Arctic to be designated a Global Sanctuary in order to preserve this pristine and most beautiful wilderness environment, which is home to many indigenous tribes who still make a living in the harsh conditions and also the many truly wild species who call it their home and which are already under threat of extinction from the ever receding ice sheet melt. Shell has teamed up with Gazprom, one of Russia's largest oil companies to attempt to drill in the Russian Arctic next year and we at Greenpeace feel this is a disaster waiting to happen especially with both companies apalling record of oil spills and resultant cover ups. An oil spill in the Arctic would be devastating to all life contained within it and impossible to clean up especially during the severe Arctic winter. This would have a lasting impact for many generations to come, not least on climate change as it would fuel the shift in global weather patterns which cause acidification of tropical waters, droughts, flooding, wildfires, famines, tornadoes and hurricanes amongst many things. Say NO to ALL drilling in the Arctic.
