Yorkshire South (Sheffield) group members met outside Shell garages at York Road, Doncaster & Ecclesall Road & Netherthorpe Road in Sheffield to hand in a letter to the managers in protest at Shell's plans to commence drilling for oil this summer in the Arctic.
Oil reserves under the Arctic ice are estimated as only being large enough to last for 3 years. Shell intend to commence drilling and risk an unprecedented environmental disaster. Is it really only 2 years since the "worst US environmental disaster" when millions of crude oil spilt into the Gulf of Mexico, a disaster whose consequences are still being felt today. How more important then is it that we speak up now against the plans of Shell to drill in our most pristine, most beautiful environment on earth, where the consequences of a spill would be immeasureable and the catastrophic pollution caused would be impossible to clean up. A disaster of this magnitude would affect the balance of the fragile ecosystem & its inhabitants, not only the magnificent polar bear but also the arctic fox, emperor penguin, beluga whale, ringed seal, salmon, sealion & walrus would all suffer due to melting of the polar ice caps and the subsequent global warming that desalination would set off.
We asked many people to text SHELL to 60777 or email Peter Voser Shells CEO, by far the most popular was texting. At Netherthorpe Shell station we didn't see as many people walking by but judging by the smiles & waves from cars & even the occasional shout, & the myriad honking horns from cars, the supertram, a fire engine & even an ambulance our dancing polar bear (borrowed of course) was a great hit. Many thanks to all of our supporters and the people who took the time to speak to us, take a leaflet, text & yes even honk at our dancing bear a BIG thankyou!
