South Yorkshire Greenpeace volunteers were honoured to have the support of Superman and Wonderwoman at their campaign stall in Sheffield on the 30th October.
Over 75 petition cards were signed by members of the general public and caped crusaders to voice their concerns over the Energy Security and Green Economy Bill due to go through parliament this winter.
Although the Coalition Government promised to be the “greenest government ever”, its first energy bill looks more like a dirty energy bill – with measures to make it easier for oil companies to exploit the last oil reserves in UK waters, using dangerous deep-water drilling techniques, risking major oil spills and increasing climate change.
Promises of new jobs in the “Green Economy” seem to have dried up in the energy bill as the government backs down on its promise to invest in an efficient, clean economy for Britain.
With the help of the public, Greenpeace are campaigning for changes to the bill to push for clean, green energy alternatives such as solar and off-shore wind to help the economy move beyond our dwindling oil resources. Local Greenpeace members are also contacting their MPs such as Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, to persuade them to boost green measures in the Energy Bill.
