IKEA makes global bid to save ancient rainforests

Deforestation in the Amazon
24 November 1999 - IKEA announced at a joint press conference with Greenpeace today a global commitment to phase out its use of solid wood from ancient forests.
Susanne Pulverer Bergstrand, Environmental Manager for the IKEA Group, said: "IKEA's long term goal is to ensure that all the wood in its products comes from well-managed forests. The first step is to see that no solid wood is coming from ancient forests or forests with high conservation values."
John Sauven, Campaigns Director at Greenpeace, said: "Other retailers that sell timber products will now have to examine their own environmental performance and explain to their customers why they are not following IKEA's example."
