Greenpeace response to the Liberal Democrats’ vote supporting UK electricity being carbon-free by 2030

24 September, 2012

In response to the Liberal Democrats’ vote supporting UK electricity being carbon-free by 2030, Greenpeace’s Political Advisor Joss Garman said:

"Nick Clegg must ensure this doesn't become another ‘sorry’. The Liberal Democrats need to vote for the 2030 goal in parliament.

"Labour and the Lib Dems now both support the decarbonisation goal, leaving George Osborne increasingly isolated. Forward-thinking Conservatives should also step up and help make carbon-free electricity law, so clean energy investors can have confidence, and households can enjoy stabilised electricity bills."

Joss Garman also welcomed the Lib Dem’s support for the Green Investment Bank being able to borrow now, rather than waiting until the deficit falls. “The Green Investment Bank should become a key vehicle to help us out of these tough economic times, and also a clever way to tackle climate change.”
