Two days after releasing a report exposing Tesco for stocking beef products linked to illegally destroyed Amazonian rainforests in Brazil, the company have today confirmed to Greenpeace that they have ceased all contracts with JBS.
Tesco’s decision comes after two days of negotiations with Greenpeace. It means that Tesco will no longer stock any beef products from JBS Brazil in their 5380 stores in 14 countries across the globe.
Commenting on Tesco’s decision Sarah Shoraka from Greenpeace said:
This is good news for the Amazon and Tesco should be congratulated for acting swiftly to disassociate their brand from the environmentally destructive practices of JBS.
Tesco’s decision is a huge blow to JBS in a week where they have already lost contacts from Adidas and follows moves by companies such as Ikea, Sainsbury’s, Clarks and Asda to switch suppliers. JBS shareholders, including the Brazilian Government that has a 30%s stake, will rightly be worrying today how much longer they can afford to prop up a company whose reputation now lies in tatters.”
