The exploitation of tar sands oil deposits is already one of the largest industrial
projects on the planet and has created disfiguring scars and toxic lakes that can
be seen from space. As well as the environmental destruction on the ground, the
production methods involved require vast amounts of energy, making tar sands
oil one of the dirtiest, most carbon intensive fuels on the planet. In addition, many
indigenous First Nations communities are taking legal action against oil
developers in Alberta, and there remain significant uncertainties around the long
term profitability of the tar sands business model itself.
