Fracking in the UK: What does Poyry report on fracking for shale gas mean for bills?
We look at one of the most quoted studies on fracking and bills - a report by energy consultants Poyry commissioned by Cuadrilla. What does it say - and what assumptions does it make.

Not fracking

Households cut energy use by a quarter
Households in England and Wales cut their energy use by a quarter over a six year period, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Average consumption of gas and electricity fell by 24.7% between 2005 and 2011.

2,000 protesters march on Balcombe

The Guardian reports that 2,000 protesters from around the country marched on the Cuadrilla drilling site near Balcombe over the weekend. Demonstrators were peaceful and formed a (partial) human chain around the drilling site.

The protest comes ahead of an expected wave of direct action which The Mail and Telegraph have termed 'mob rule' after Cuadrilla  suspended drilling at their site for the week.

Early reports suggest activists are protesting in or at HQ's of Cuadrilla and Bell Pottinger.

Church moves to claim mineral rights under land
The Church of England has moved to enforce it's mineral rights under 500,00 acres of land across England. A Church of England spokesman told the Independent the decision to secure ancient rights now is due to upcoming legal deadline, not an attempt to gain profits from shale gas mining

Church says fracking must consider fuel poor
The Church of England has argued that fuel poverty should be considered alongside climate change in the debate over fracking.

Wind turbines do more damage than fracking
Times columnist Matt Ridley 'shatters five myths' about shale gas drilling.

US energy boom fuels exports
The boom in shale gas and oil from fracking is fuelling an increase in US exports - according to the FT.

RSPB object to two fracking sites
The RSPB has lodged objections to proposals to drill for shale gas and oil in Lancashire and West Sussex. The bird charity says regulations are inadequate to ensure water, landscapes and wildlife are protected. It comes as environmental NGOs issued a joint letter calling for the government to 'put the breaks' on fracking.

BBC looks at fracking and water contamination
T
he BBC's Matt McGrath looks at the issue of fracking and water contamination - specifically whether it can happen as a result of problems with the well casing during the drilling process. The results - you won't be surprised to hear - appear inconclusive.

Carbon Brief have also looked at the issue of shale gas and water use here.

US shale land-grab slows abruptly
North American oil and gas deals, including shale assets, plunged 52 percent to $26 billion in the first six months from $54 billion in the year-ago period, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. During the drilling frenzy of 2009 through 2012, energy companies spent more than $461 billion buying North American oil and gas properties, the data show.
