A short round-up this morning...

UK

Centrica buys into UK shale
British gas owner Centrica has become the first big player to jump into UK shale - but not in the way many (including this round-up) anticipated. Rather than buy into an existing explorer it's announced that it is to buy 25% of Cuadrilla's licence area. The news of a big firm entering the fray will come as a major boost to the industry and was welcomed by none other than George Osborne himself.

DECC withholding details on key projects
The Guardian reports that key information about the progress of many of the UK government's most costly projects is being withheld by  the Department of Energy and Climate Change. The department is refusing to release progress reports for 12 out its 13 major projects, which include the green deal for energy-efficient homes, smart meters, electricity market reformnew nuclear power stations and its nuclear waste storage programme.

Merkel to cut green subsidies

German Chancellor Angela Merkel promised on Wednesday to scale back Germany's generous system of subsidies to the renewables sector if she is re-elected in September, in a sign that the costs of Germany's energy revolution have become an election issue. It comes as The Telegraph reports that David Cameron may be mulling doing much the same.

BP energy stats - the round-up
Energy wonks everywhere rejoice, BP has put out it's stats for 2012. We learned that coal was still the world's fastest growing fossil fuel, specially in China. That US oil production rose sharply thanks to shale oil and that, despite shale, the world has slightly less gas then BP thought last year (though still a lot).
