Ask for a review of government policy on coal

Gordon Brown's government is about to take one of the most important climate change decisions since Mr Brown became Prime Minister: whether or not to approve a new generation of dirty coal-fired power stations, beginning with Kingsnorth in Kent. If approved, this new coal plant alone would pollute more than the thirty least polluting countries combined and would set a dangerous precedent.

We don't need new coal. We need an energy system that can meet the demands of the 21st century - decentralised energy, based on efficiency and renewables.

The incredibly significant decision over new coal lies with John Hutton - the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.

The decision to build new coal plants in the UK has enormous ramifications for our ability to meet our emissions reductions targets - and shouldn't be taken without a full public inquiry and a comprehensive review of current coal policy.

Please do your bit to stop climate change. Email John Hutton and tell him why you think we need a broad review of the government's coal policy.
