The Rainbow Warrior III

[ibimage==7140==blog_landscape==none==self==null]The world’s first purpose-built environmental campaigning vessel

So many environmental crimes happen at sea, within the global commons which have no voice of their own. This is why ships continue to be an essential tool for Greenpeace campaigns.

Our new Rainbow Warrior will be the world’s first purpose built environmental campaigning vessel. Built with the latest advances in environmental construction, she will not only reduce our own carbon footprint but she will also serve as an example to others for smart environmental investment.

Here are some of her specifications and advantages, showing the many ways in which we will be at the cutting-edge of environmental campaigning across the globe.

Designed to take action
Investigating, documenting, and taking direct action in unforgiving environments demands for specialist equipment that is equal to the task.

COMPARISON OF SAIL AREAS:

  • Rainbow Warrior II - 471.09 m2
  • Rainbow Warrior III - 1,290.00 m2
  • She will harness more wind and travel faster and more efficiently than ever before, with sails large enough to cover four and half tennis courts
  • Combining all her power she will be as fast as the industrial vessels she challenges, reaching +15 knots
  • We will carry more cargo, more crew and have more operating space as she will stretch to 58 metres long and 11 metres wide - that’s the length of two blue whales
  • In taking direct action and in emergencies, her inflatable boats are designed to be deployed within 5 minutes even in waves up to 3.5 metres high
  • We shall be able to spot illegal fishing vessels up to 15 miles away from the 50 metre high crows nest, towering the height of Nelson’s column
  • We will be capable of handling heavy scientific equipment and specialist cargo up to 8 tonnes in weight by using cranes at the front and back of the ship.
  • We will have a vital eye in the sky, spotting shipments of illegal wood and bearing witness from above, using her new helicopter landing pad
  • Plenty of functional space will allow our scientists to conduct analysis on the ship, rather than waiting until they return to shore

A floating media centre
The new Rainbow Warrior will be a virtual office at sea. A high-spec onboard communications centre will enable us to transmit to the world media in minutes and allow supporters a much greater level of interaction with the ship’s crew.

  • We will have the advantage of streaming live footage from the scene of environmental crimes, direct to the world media, through a satellite communications system giving us constant broadband access anywhere in the world
  • Our press conferences will be un-interrupted and inviting in our new dedicated conference room - a welcome change to the challenges of transmitting in harsh weathers out on deck
  • We will be capable of processing photography and video, from some of the most remote parts of the globe, and be able to send it direct to the media from our two editing suites
  • Even if our ship is boarded we can continue to transmit from our special radio room that has been designed to be secure behind steel bulkheads

A green ship for a green planet
Every decision made at every stage of her life will ensure our new Warrior is as clean and green as she can be - From mining the materials needed to build her, to the shape of her hull, right through the end of her life when laying her to rest.

  • As a hybrid vessel sails will be her main choice of propulsion, but electric and diesel engines are available when needed, such as in unsuitable weather conditions or chasing a deep water oil drilling ship
  • Heat from the engine and generators will be recycled to heat cabins and provide hot water, and she will also have biological treatment of gray and black water
  • Innovative equipment for exhaust-gas treatment will reduce harmful emissions, as will toxic free paint
  • She will have a green ship class notation and a ‘green passport’ meaning that she will fulfil the highest environmental standards

Building a new Rainbow Warrior will enable us to be at the cutting edge of environmental campaigning across the globe.
