G20: Obama still finds time for historic US/Russia nuclear arms reduction plan

Barack Obama: copywrite SEIU International

During his election campaign President Obama placed a high emphasis on dealing with one of the greatest threats we all face - reducing the vast numbers of nuclear missiles held by both Russia and the United States.

As he put it in his inauguration speech "With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat" In response to an arms control survey he was more specific – "I will not authorize the development of new nuclear weapons. And I will make the goal of eliminating nuclear weapons worldwide a central element of U.S. nuclear policy."

Greenpeace comment on government PFI lending plans

3 Mar 2009

Responding to government plans to lend billions of pounds to PFI projects, Dr Doug Parr of Greenpeace said:

"Brown has forked out hundreds of billions of pounds to bail out the banks. Now he's found billions more to widen the M25.

"But the 21st Century industries and technologies, that will actually create sustainable new UK jobs, have so far been ignored.

"As the prime minister meets President Obama, he should finally show the courage to build an economy based on cutting-edge clean technologies. It is investment in these industries that will deliver a real, long-term future for UK jobs and businesses."

Childish things? - MPs to vote today on Heathrow

Barack Obama Greenpeace Advert.

A detail from the Heathrow advert we put in the papers today

Tonight the House of Commons plays host to the Heathrow face-off. At about 7pm this evening, MPs will vote on a motion brought by the Tories and Lib Dems against the government's plans for expanding the airport with a third runway and a sixth terminal.

The stage is set for a bit of mud-slinging in the House. It'll probably be made worse by the fact that it's the opposition who has scheduled the vote - the government didn't want to have one. Because of the realities of party politics, even Labour MPs who oppose the runway will think twice about voting for a motion that's been put up by the ‘enemy'.

Dinner date with destiny

The climate crunch will soon make the credit crunch look trivial, and the G20 summit must tackle it now, writes Greenpeace UK Executive Director John Sauven writes for Comment is free.

This evening, 20 world leaders will gather in Washington, where they will dine at the table of their host, George W Bush, before attempting to perform life-saving surgery on the global economy.

Even in the face of the extraordinary repudiation delivered last week by the American people, Bush is unlikely to use the summit to also reshape the world's response to climate change. But that's exactly what his 19 guests should do.

The Obama drama: welcome back, USA

I've noticed a higher-than-expected amount of traffic going to our Obama press statement over the past couple of days, so it looks like people are interested in what we make of Obama's victory.

I think this image, on the homepage of the Greenpeace USA website, says it all:

Greenpeace reaction to Barack Obama winning US presidential election

5 Nov 2008

John Sauven, Greenpeace executive director, said:

"It's a great relief that the Bush years are now all but over. We lost precious time in the fight against climate change as a scientifically and morally illiterate administration blocked action at every turn. President Obama now has an opportunity to invest in a Green New Deal, one in which billions of dollars and political capital are directed towards delivering low-carbon technologies that create jobs and slash emissions. Welcome back America."
