Some good news just in from Brazil, where soya traders have reinforced their commitment to boycott soya grown in newly deforested areas of the Amazon.

Clearing-cutting to make space for new soya plantations has been one of the main causes of rainforest destruction in recent years, which is why we campaigned successfully for a moratorium (temporary ban) three years ago.

With the current climate talks now underway in Poznan, the Brazilian government has finally fulfilled a promise it made at the previous round of talks in Bali last year and set targets for reducing deforestation in the Amazon. It's great to see they finally have some targets to work towards (and it's been a long time coming) but as is often the way with these political initiatives, it all falls short of what's really needed.

Forest fires in the Amazon August 2008

This week the Brazilian National Institute of Space Research published their latest figures on Amazon rainforest deforestation and the trees are falling as fast as the FTSE.

According to the institute, deforestation in August was three times higher than the same period last year. Using satellite imagery they have reported that 756 km2 were destroyed – that’s twice the rate of deforestation in July.

Ban on illegal logging of timber in the Brazilian Amazon State of Pará

Following the success of the soya moratorium extension, illegal and destructive logging of timber is in the spotlight in the Amazon. A new agreement signed in the State of Pará is set to ban trade in timber that isn't from legal and sustainable sources. What makes this ban significant is that almost half the timber logged in the Amazon comes from the state of Pará.

Amazon protected from soya growers for another year

We have some truly excellent news to share about the ongoing campaign to protect the Amazon rainforest. The moratorium on deforestation for new soya plantations and the use of forced labour - which was the result of our McDonald's campaign two years ago - has been extended for another year. The original announcement by the major soya traders in Brazil only ran until this July, but now they've signed up to a further 12 months.

Deforestation in the Amazon

After losing respected environment minister Marina Silva from his cabinet last week, President Lula of Brazil has filled the gaping hole left by her departure. But whether the new minister Carlos Minc has the same commitment to protecting the Amazon as his predecessor, we'll just have to wait and see.
