It's time to stand up to the energy giants

Against the backdrop of the worldwide economic downturn, it is ironic that the area often said to have the least business certainty, the renewables sector, is one of the few success stories. Globally this industry is bucking the trends, creating millions of new green jobs, increasing countries' energy independence and reducing climate-changing emissions. So it is scandalous that the CBI should come out attacking the prime minister and the climate change secretary Ed Miliband's commitment to boosting this industry in Britain just days before the launch of a fresh government initiative.

Brown shows his true colours on climate change

It's odd at this time of year for so much hot air to be blowing.

Just last week the prime minister promised us 20 per cent of our energy from renewables by 2020. Yet today he told an audience of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) that nuclear power projects "potentially have a role to play in tackling climate change and improving energy security".

Declarations like this threaten to strangle the renewables industry before it can even get close to that 2020 target.

A climber at the CBI conference holds a banner reading NUCLEAR: WRONG ANSWER

This morning Greenpeace climbers scuppered Blair's nuclear announcement by delaying the Prime Minister's planned pro nuclear speech at the CBI annual conference.

Two Greenpeace climbers scaled the ceiling above the speakers podium holding banners saying 'nuclear - wrong answer' and then dropping down 'radioactive' confetti preventing Blair from speaking in the main gallery.

Why we no longer trust Blair on climate

Tony Blair

Tony Blair

At regular intervals over the last few years, Tony Blair has given strong speeches on the importance and urgency of tackling climate change. He has told us that this is the single greatest challenge facing the international community, and that the scientific evidence is alarming. He is certainly right about that. He has also said that he is personally passionate about solving the problem.

Greenpeace has been sharply critical of Blair on other issues - on GM, nuclear power and, above all, Iraq. But on climate we have tried to believe in his sincerity. We need politicians to take the lead, and we need to support them when they do. It's not our style to ask automatically, as Jeremy Paxman does, "why is this bastard lying to me?"
