Last week, the European Commission announced a key change to legislation that could virtually stop the import of fuel made from tar sands into the EU. If it becomes law, it would make tar sands projects an even more risky bet for energy companies and investors.

On Wednesday the European Commission launched its proposals for a reform of the way Europe’s seas and fish are managed. After such a positive start back in 2009 when the Commission published its progressive green paper [PDF], it has been downhill ever since.

Make some sweet forest loving

The bad news is that the vote on illegal timber amongst members of the European Commission has been delayed (they're looking at legislation to ban dodgy wood from Europe) and now probably won't take place until September. The good news is that it gives us all a chance to have some fun in the meantime (and do some creative campaigning at the same time).

We all love forests and we want you to show the powers that be in the EU just how much. The forests have already made their own effort, but here's what we'd like you to do:

Art is a great way of campaigning and that's exactly what our EU unit did at the European Commission's headquarters in Brussels today. A 12 metre illegally logged Amazon tree trunk was unveiled, studded with nine video monitors by celebrated Brazilian artist Siron Franco. The monitors drew attention to the trade in illegal timber from the Amazon by displaying images of the rainforest's destruction and also its beauty.

EC sounds alarm bells over GM crops

GM food producers are reeling after new investigations by the European Commission (EC) uncovered problems with three new types of genetically modified crops. The Commission raised concerns over a new type of GM potato and two types of GM maize, all of which had previously been given the green light by European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). For the first time, Europe's most senior lawmakers are publicly questioning the safety of GM crops.

Greenpeace will sue European Commission to save butterfly species

The European Commission is obliged to cancel the market approval for all genetically engineered Bt-crops according to an independent legal opinion prepared for Greenpeace. Allowing the Bt maize crops to be grown commercially while halting the approval process for similar new crops is a breach of EU law.
