Flashmob Heathrow tomorrow
Posted by christian on 16 January 2009.
Yesterday, the government approved a third runway for Heathrow. That means tomorrow (Saturday) is the 'Decision Day' Flash Mob at Heathrow Terminal 5.
If you want to show that you're against unsustainable aviation expansion head along to the 'Security North' section of the terminal's Departures area just before 12 noon. The idea of a flashmob is that it appears out of nowhere, so the plan is to wear a (concealed) red t-shirt, and then on the stroke of midday join the other flashmobbers in revealing your opposition to the third runway.

UK Climate Campers taking their message to E.ON's Munich headquarters
I hope you remember this year's Climate Camp in the shadow of Kingsnorth coal plant in Kent. All the police intimidation, direct actions and ultimately the acquittal of our Kingsnorth six. The events in the past few months should have been enough for E.ON to see the level of public unease at their plans for Kingsnorth. But the giant energy utility is still insisting on building Britain's first coal-fired power station in over 30 years there. So, this time climate campers decided to take their message to E.ON on its own turf in Munich, Germany.

First it was Heathrow, then Manchester and now it's time to flashmob London City Airport. Looks like the government still doesn't understand the danger posed to the climate from the plans to expand airports across the country. So join the next flash mob on October 8 at 5.45pm outside Newham Town Hall, East Ham wearing your red t-shirts to tell Newham Council to scrap airport expansion plans.
The flashmob will overlap with the planning meeting that will decide on increasing flights to and from London City Airport by up to 50 per cent. Pressure is mounting on Gordon Brown after the Conservatives boldly called for Heathrow's third runway plans to be scrapped. Come along and show your support for local group Fight the Flights.
It's flashmob time again: stop expansion at Manchester Airport

The battle to win hearts and minds on the critical airport expansion issue continues apace. The latest group to take the field is in Manchester, where a flashmob is being organised to protest against the expansion of Heathrow, Manchester and all UK airports.
It's being called to coincide with the Labour Party Conference in Manchester and, in true flashmob fashion, will mysteriously manifest in Albert Square outside Manchester Town Hall on Tuesday 23rd September at 12.45pm sharp!

Flashmob at Heathrow's Terminal 5 this morning
This morning saw the opening of Heathrow's new Terminal 5 to the public. Unfortunately for the aviation industry and government - who wanted this to be a chance to promote their case for airport expansion - a large section of that public is vehemently opposed to unsustainable aviation growth, and not afraid to show it.
So at exactly 11am this morning, hundreds of people stripped down to reveal identical "Stop Airport Expansion T-shirts", and to highlight the problems caused by airport expansion and unsustainable aviation growth. Pictures of the flashmob are coming in to our Moblog thick and fast. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see video footage of the event.

The end of the Heathrow stitch up consultation is nigh, so here's another quick reminder that, on Monday, MPs, activists, authors, and, well, all sorts of people opposing Heathrow expansion are holding a mass rally and filling Central Hall in Westminster.
