Deported while working to expose Asia Pulp and Paper's lies and greenwash about deforestation

Until two days ago, I was in Indonesia. I'd travelled there to work with colleagues in Jakarta and Sumatra on our continuing campaign to end the devastation of the country's magnificent rainforests.

But after an extremely intense few days, I left the country prematurely on Wednesday evening. I had been due to stay longer and had a business visa to allow me to do that, but the advice we were receiving was  that if I stayed it was likely to bring more risk to my colleagues working there.

I’ve been working with Greenpeace for more than 20 years and until now I had never been deported from any country. Until last week, that is, when I tried to enter Indonesia to spend time with our staff in Jakarta in support of their work against deforestation.

It’s now been one year since pressure from thousands of people around the world convinced Nestlé, the world’s largest food and drink company, to give Indonesian rainforests and their inhabitants a break by removing products responsible for deforestation from their supply chains.

Bad week in business for Sinar Mas

More of Sinar Mas's handiwork, this time in an area known to support endangered Sumatran tigers 

There's been a not insignificant amount of fallout from the implosion of Sinar Mas's audit last week. You'll remember that the independent auditors demanded public clarification on some statements made by Sinar Mas about the results of said audit which were not, in fact, supported by the audit itself.

First of all (and this might be a complete coincidence), shares for Golden Agri Resources (Gar) - one of the Sinar Mas group's palm oil producers - fell by over 6 per cent between 19 and 23 August. PT Smart, another palm oil arm, dropped by nearly 3 per cent.
