As global oil reserves run low, the oil giants are looking further and further afield in search of new oil. On Wednesday, in New York, Shell are being brought to trial for human rights abuses in Nigeria - human rights abuses which from the point of view of the court will have happened a long time ago, and a long way away. Crimes committed, if you like, at a distance.

Shell to be taken to court over complicity in human rights abuses in Nigeria

Gas flaring in Nigeria

Gas flares burn constantly in the Nigerian oil fields.

To those interested in environmental issues and corporate accountability, Shell is a dirty name, and uttering it will likely be met with a well-deserved grimace. To those not in the know about Shell's track record, the oil giant not only massively contributes to climate change, but their practices consistently displace and damage communities, threaten biodiversity and destroy wildlife.

Wouldn't it be nice if at least once, the people pushing for environmental and social justice won against the big players who are driven by their greed, and who give no thought to the consequences of their actions? Well, that time may have come.
