Today's verdict is a slap in the face for all of us

Organised crime seems to pay quite handsomely, especially if you manage to be part of a profession that seems to be beyond reproach. That can surely be the only conclusion to draw from the group of 17 fishermen who were fined a mere £720 thousand in court today for an overfishing scam that effectively stole £63 MILLION of fish from our seas.

Zombies sneak under the wire

Thursday we issued a zombie warning – we had concerns that armies of undead arguments were likely to crawl from their graves onto ITV’s ‘Tonight: the real cost of going green’. Did you spot any?

Well, perhaps not entire armies - ITV were a bit more sensible than we expected. And they were a lot more sensible than the Panorama crew who based a whole documentary on a KPMG report on the costs of renewables, which they never actually saw, and which KPMG have now decided not to release. Overall, Tonight was relatively even-handed. Perhaps the KPMG fiasco has taught the media to be a bit less trusting of dubious pronouncements on green energy. 

Nevertheless, a few zombies did manage to sneak under the wire.

MPs should keep their promises - not back £1 billion windfall for nuclear power

A vote will happen in parliament either late tonight or tomorrow on government plans to hand out a whopping £1billion in new subsidies for the nuclear industry. The money will come from energy consumer pockets and will go to EDF and Centrica for doing absolutely nothing new at all.

Twenty five years ago today, the peace and tranquillity of the small Russian town of Pripyat was shattered when reactor number four at the Chernobyl nuclear power station exploded.

Subsidy assessment of waste transfer pricing for disposal of spent fuel from new nuclear power stations

A key plank of the government’s Coalition Agreement was that any new nuclear power would not be subsidised. Liberal Democrat policy couldn’t be clearer – ‘Reject a new generation of nuclear power stations based on the evidence nuclear is a far more expensive way of reducing carbon emissions than promoting energy conservation and renewable energy.’ Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has insisted again that there would be no public subsidy. But new nuclear power stations are not profitable without massive subsidies from the public purse.
