Business and government can make swift changes when they want... or are forced to

Jeff Swartz, CEO of Timberland wrote recently in the Harvard Business Review, 'You can tell a lot about how your day is going to unfold by the number of e-mails that are waiting for you ...  On June 1, 2009, they kept coming, and coming, and coming.'

The emails flooding Jeff Swartz's inbox were coming in response to a newly released Greenpeace report about deforestation in the Amazon. The gist of the report was that (a) Brazilian cattle farmers are illegally clear-cutting Amazon rainforests to create pastures, and (b) the leather from their cows might be winding up in shoes - including Timberland's.

You actually helped stop deforestation in the Amazon. Good work.

Ever feel powerless? Worried that the problem is too big? Worried that you can't have an impact?

(Timberland are a big shoe company who, after being told to sort out their supply chain by you lot, helped us put pressure on big cattle companies to stop their businesses destroying the Amazon rainforest. This guy is their CEO.)

After working with us over the past few weeks, Clarks have today announced that they will ensure the suppliers that provide the leather for their shoes from stop sourcing it from deforested areas of the Amazon. This is a really positive move - they're not only rejecting leather from illegally logged areas of the region, but from any cattle ranch that is being run on deforested land.

Last night another piece of the reaction to our Slaughtering the Amazon report fell into place, as British shoemaker Clarks agreed not to source leather products from Amazon deforestation.

Think about what causes climate change. The immediate visual vocabulary that springs to mind is of power station chimneys, jumbo jets criss-crossing the sky, maybe colossal container ships circling the globe. You're probably not thinking of a glossy trainer advert.
