Floating fish factories are plundering fish stocks off West Africa

Our friends in Greenpeace Holland have today painted the sides of three of Europe’s largest factory fishing vessels in the port of IJmuiden, identifying the amount of EU subsidies these ships have received - subsidies which enable them to plunder the waters of West Africa.

For the African Voices tour, three West African fishermen came to the UK to reveal the harsh reality behind our hunger for fish: while their communities rely on the seas for vital protein, our industrial-sized European fishing fleets are pillaging their waters, leaving little fish to make a living from - let alone feed their families.

Three leaders of West African fishing communities arrived in the UK on Sunday to embark on a week long mission: to reveal how massive European fleets are not just destroying ocean ecosystems in Africa, but also lives and communities.

On Sunday the latest leg of African Voices begins, as three delegates from West African fishing communities arrive in London to start a tour of the UK, speaking out on how the invasion of industrial-sized EU fleets are threatening their livelihoods, food security and marine ecosystems.

When we mention pirates, the most common image that springs to mind is of something comical, stereotyped, and fanciful. 'Pirate' has become synonymous with kid's cartoons, swashbuckling movies, and far-too-many fancy dress outfits. Beyond the likes of Johnny Depp and Captain Pugwash we might just associate piracy with illegal DVDs.

But increasingly real-life modern day pirates are making the news too, with dramatic confrontations in the waters off Africa
