I moved to Cornwall to work on a PhD and now live in Falmouth where I am working to set up my own walking business. In the past I have been a teacher, an outdoor education instructor and worked in the Rights of Way Office, here in Cornwall, digitally enhancing Cornwall’s network of pathways and bridleways.
Having started a degree in environmental studies back in the 80s I was very aware that the world has finite resources and that we should be exploring ways to live within these limits. A field trip in India opened my eyes to inequalities on a large scale and I joined an activist group in Goa campaigning against 5 star hotels using water in an unsustainable way impacting the lives of local villages. I saw that action was needed and that I had to get involved in environmental and ecological issues in some way.
2012 has been an amazing experience as the Cornwall group were very involved with the ‘Be a fisherman’s friend’ campaign. It started quite quietly with a small stall in Falmouth but we went on to attend lots of festivals, sing sea shanties, dress as fish and ask hundreds of people to sign paper fish. This led to many remarkable conversations with people whose livelihoods were directly involved with the campaign. We met the MEP Julie Girling to hand over the signed fish and were amazed to have her complete and very strong support. The culmination of which was the recent news that the EU had voted to end discards and change the quota system.
For the last ten years I have been a member of a number of Greenpeace groups as I have moved around the country. I have helped organise events, attended street actions, been part of the climbing team at Glastonbury Festival and spent many days last year dressed as a fishmonger! In that time I have met some wonderfully dynamic and inspiring people and am now thrilled to be part of the team as a Greenspeaker in Cornwall.
