I first volunteered with Greenpeace over two years ago at a freshers' fair stall, where one particular campaign had caught my eye: the plight of orang-utans and other endangered species threatened by deforestation due to the global demand for unsustainable palm oil.

Having been lucky enough to see Bornean orang-utans in the wild, and through studying anthropology at university, I got to talk to people about why conserving primates and their natural habitats is so important. Nonhuman primates are our closest living relatives, and because of this, I think many people identify with them more than they do other species, which, in my mind, makes primates the ideal animal ambassadors for much broader environmental issues.

That said, I've also enjoyed dressing up as a polar bear to raise awareness about corporate exploitation of the Arctic. In addition to the fun I've had with Greenpeace, I've produced promotional videos for several community organizations in Richmond, and worked on the Low Carbon Zone project to reduce energy consumption in homes and schools in my local area. Most recently I completed my Master's thesis on the evolution of vocal communication in primates, and it's great to have more opportunities to communicate with people as a Greenspeaker about the problems facing our planet and the inspiring activism performed in the name of Greenpeace.
